This symposium is intended for mathematicians interested in the fields of group theory, representation theory, algebraic groups, algebraic geometry, quadratic forms, central simple algebras, invariant theory, moduli spaces and related topics, the unifying theme being the notion of essential dimension introduced in 1995 by J.Buhler and Z.Reichstein.
Essential dimension is roughly speaking a measure of the number of parameters needed to define algebraic objects (see the wikipedia entry for more information). The symposium focuses on trends and new techniques in this topic.

The symposium is held in Kurssaal 117 of the old university on Rheinsprung 9, Basel. The building is on the way to the math institute if you come from the tram station Schifflände. The registration will be at the entrance of this building. The entrance will be clearly marked with direction signs. The second photo on this webpage shows the entrance.
